The building and its setting
The low, harled buildings have simple doors and unusually broad paired windows. Stone surrounds and pantiled roofs distinguish them from the larger neighbouring buildings.
Its story
HES identifies the pair as a survival from the town’s weaving period and records their rescue from dereliction and restoration in 1988. The 2025 conservation appraisal confirms their continuing place within the Wellwynd streetscape.
Why it is included
These cottages bring working homes into a selection otherwise dominated by institutional architecture.
What to look for
- The broad stone-mullioned windows
- Pantiles and the low street elevation
Reading the surroundings
Observe from public space; check current arrangements before entering buildings or grounds.
What we know — and what remains uncertain
The listing’s reconstructed weaver’s house and exhibition-space description is historical; present opening arrangements have not been verified.
