The building and its setting
The bowed sandstone front has pilasters, regular upper windows and a central pediment crowned by the burgh arms. The curvature makes the building an active element of the junction.
Its story
James Thomson designed the corn exchange and market in 1856. It became a theatre, hippodrome and cinema in 1908, and the HES account later records bingo and amusement uses. The conservation appraisal highlights its role in the street junction.
Why it is included
The market adds trade and commercial entertainment to the civic and domestic selection.
What to look for

- Upper-storey details above later shopfront alterations
Reading the surroundings
Observe from public space; check current arrangements before entering buildings or grounds.
What we know — and what remains uncertain
The bingo use is explicitly dated 2009 in HES and is not presented as a current business listing.
