Architecture and continuing use

The ashlar elevations rise four storeys above a basement. Giant Corinthian pilasters, bowed corner bays, a balustraded parapet and carefully graded window detail give the former houses unusual monumentality at the entrance to the New Town.

Its story

The group was built during the early nineteenth-century development of Rutland Square and later combined and altered for hotel use. Its prominent corner position has made it a long-standing element of the West End townscape.

Why it is included

It shows how high-status New Town housing could be joined and adapted for hospitality while retaining a commanding urban façade.

What to notice

  • The giant Corinthian order across the upper storeys.
  • The curved corner linking Rutland Street and the square.
  • Changes in window scale from the rusticated base to the attic.

Reading the surroundings

This is a working hotel, restaurant and bar. Public hospitality areas follow the operator’s current opening and booking arrangements; bedrooms and private event areas require authorisation.

What we know — and what remains uncertain
