Architecture and continuing use

Three storeys, a basement and attic are arranged in a regular three-bay classical front. The radiating fanlight, lamp standards, panelled dining room and enriched ceilings preserve both the public face and private refinement of a late-eighteenth-century house.

Its story

The house was completed in 1790 as part of George Street’s residential development. Later commercial occupation altered its function but retained important decorative interiors, and the building now provides serviced office suites.

Why it is included

Category A designation and the survival of original external and internal features make this a strong example of the New Town house’s transition from residence to workplace.

What to notice

  • The radiating fanlight above the entrance.
  • Historic lamp standards flanking the doorway.
  • The disciplined relationship between the three-bay front and neighbouring New Town plots.

Reading the surroundings

The offices are private workplaces. The façade can be viewed from George Street; internal access requires an appointment with an occupier or building manager.
