Architecture, archaeology and continuing use

Buttressed bays and a chancel contain traceried windows with carved mask stops. The street gable is deliberately plain, with paired lancets and a small apex belfry; an open-timber roof and timber fittings survive inside.

Its story

The foundation stone was laid in August 1842 and the church opened a year later. The Scottish Episcopal charge ended with a thanksgiving service on 28 July 2024, leaving the building’s longer-term use for diocesan determination.

Why it is included

Clear authorship, intact Gothic detail and a well-documented transition from active worship to uncertain reuse make St John’s an important record of ecclesiastical change.

What to notice

  • Traceried windows framed by hood moulds and mask stops.
  • Small belfry above the restrained street gable.
  • Gatepiers and iron gates defining the church enclosure.

Reading the surroundings

The church is closed and no public interior access should be assumed. View from public space, respect the enclosure and consult the diocese for any authorised event or property enquiry.
