Architecture, archaeology and continuing use
Rubble enclosure and retaining walls define the burial ground, while a rebuilt entrance incorporates older corniced gatepiers. Gravestones of different sizes, dates and carving traditions occupy the raised interior.
Its story
The parish worshipped on this site before moving to the present church in 1789. The church was removed, but burial and commemoration sustained the ground as a distinct historic space within the town centre.
Why it is included
The churchyard records Annan’s religious life before the surviving parish church and retains social evidence in its monuments and boundaries.
What to notice
- Changes in level retained by the enclosure walls.
- Older masonry incorporated in the rebuilt gateway.
- Varied carved stones read respectfully from the paths.
Reading the surroundings
Enter only through lawful public access, keep to paths where possible and give priority to funerary, maintenance and family use. Do not touch, lean on or make rubbings from monuments.
