Architecture, archaeology and continuing use

A four-stage central tower divides a two-storey ashlar front enriched with roll moulding, crowsteps, bartizans and a slated spire. A broad arched doorway and balcony announce the public entrance, flanked by freestanding lamps.

Its story

Completed in 1875, the building gave the burgh a purpose-built civic landmark and a large first-floor hall. The Bruce Stone, removed from Annan in the early twentieth century, was later returned and set within the hall.

Why it is included

Strong townscape presence, architectural quality and continuing public service make the Town Hall one of Annan’s defining civic buildings.

What to notice

  • Conical-roofed bartizans around the tower.
  • Cable-moulded entrance beneath the balcony.
  • Freestanding lamps forming part of the designation.

Reading the surroundings

The registration office and library publish their own opening arrangements. Other rooms may be restricted for ceremonies, meetings or staff use.
