A house shaped by bridge and river

Coursed red-sandstone rubble, small openings and a steeply constrained site give the house a compact, irregular character. Its relationship with the medieval bridge matters as much as any single detail.

Its story

The house dates from about 1660 and was associated with barrel-maker James Birkmyre. It later served as an inn and a home before opening as a folk museum in the twentieth century.

Why it is included

It combines rare early domestic fabric, the river crossing and a continuing museum use in one of Dumfries’s most distinctive settings.

What to notice

  • How the house is fitted into the bridge approach and riverbank.
  • The red sandstone and small-scale openings.
  • Inside during museum hours, the tight sequence of domestic rooms and stairs.

Reading the surroundings

The museum has narrow steps and limited upper-floor access; a lower-level entrance can assist some visitors. Check seasonal opening before travelling.

  1. About 1660 The house was built beside the bridge.

What we know — and what remains uncertain

The date is approximate and the fabric reflects several later alterations; the record does not assign every feature to the first campaign.
