Architecture and continuing use

Solway House presents a castellated north front with corner towers, while extensive stone-built ranges form a large working quadrangle behind it. The composition combines domestic, administrative and agricultural architecture within one planned institution.

Its story

John Davidson designed the farm from 1890 to 1893 to support the Crichton Royal institution. It now forms part of Scotland’s Rural College’s Dairy Research Centre, where livestock, environment and farming systems are studied.

Why it is included

Its exceptional architectural completeness is reinforced by the continuation of experimental and educational agriculture on the site.

What to notice

  • Castellated towers of Solway House.
  • The scale and regular planning of the farm quadrangle.
  • Contrasts between formal house frontage and working steading ranges.

Reading the surroundings

This is an operating research farm with livestock and machinery. Do not enter working areas without permission; use only authorised routes and follow biosecurity instructions.
