Architecture and continuing use

A circular basin rests on an ornamental pedestal carried by four arched supports, with smaller basins rising above. The whole composition stands within a larger circular trough; its former enclosing railings have gone.

Its story

James H MacGowan erected the fountain in 1913 in memory of his mother Jean, who died in 1864. It remains at the road junction named in the designation, though its working condition is not established.

Why it is included

Its unusual glazed material, personal commemoration and prominent public position make this Category B fountain a distinctive small monument.

What to notice

  • Glazed terracotta rather than carved stone.
  • Four arched supports beneath the main basin.
  • The inscribed memorial and now-open setting.

Reading the surroundings

View from public space with great care: the fountain stands at a road junction. Do not step into traffic or assume that water is potable or the fountain operational.

Timeline

  1. 1864 Jean MacGowan, later commemorated by the fountain, died.
  2. 1913 Her youngest son James H MacGowan erected the memorial fountain.
  3. 1987 The structure entered the statutory list at Category B.
  4. 2026 Current mapping continues to identify the memorial at the Dalbeattie Road junction.

What we know — and what remains uncertain

Neither HES nor the checked current map source confirms working water, so the record treats it as a memorial rather than an operating drinking fountain.
