Architecture, archaeology and continuing use

Two- and three-storey ranges extend across twelve bays. Tooled stone, a coat-of-arms entrance, crowstepped gable, oriel, dormers and conical-roofed bartizans create a vigorous Scottish Baronial composition.

Its story

An earlier Grant Arms accommodated Queen Victoria and Prince Albert in 1860. Railway arrival in 1863 expanded tourism, and the present range was built in 1875 before major additions between 1879 and 1890.

Why it is included

Category C listing recognises a prominent historic hotel whose accumulated fabric links royal travel, railway tourism and the planned town’s public space.

What to notice

  • The crowstepped gable and projecting oriel.
  • Angle bartizans with fish-scale slate roofs.
  • The later entrance with its central coat of arms.

Reading the surroundings

This is an operating hotel. Non-residents should use advertised public facilities and respect guest and staff-only areas.
