Architecture, archaeology and continuing use
Two storeys and an attic are arranged across five bays in dressed rubble. Large openings, windows set close to the eaves, modest dormers and traditional stacks give the building a plain but well-proportioned presence.
Its story
The building dates from the early nineteenth century and appears as Dunbar’s Hotel on the 1868 Ordnance Survey map. It served the principal route through the town and survived later tourism-led expansion, with subsequent adaptation for housing.
Why it is included
Category B listing reflects the authenticity of an early town hotel and its contribution to the surviving Georgian grain of the High Street.
What to notice
- First-floor windows placed close beneath the eaves.
- Contrasting small dormers above the long frontage.
- Simple rubble construction without later Baronial display.
