Architecture and continuing use

The three-storey ashlar building combines courtroom and cells with a tall staged tower, belfry and battlemented skyline. Baronial detail makes the civic complex a deliberate High Street landmark.

Its story

William Robertson designed the present Tolbooth in 1838–39 on the site of earlier burgh buildings. It served court, council and custodial functions before passing into heritage and community use.

Why it is included

Its Category A designation, complete civic functions, strong townscape role and publicly interpreted interiors make it a central Forres record.

What to notice

  • The staged clock tower above the High Street.
  • Separate architectural treatment of courtroom and cells.
  • Battlements and corner details shaping the Baronial silhouette.

Reading the surroundings

Forres Heritage Trust publishes tours, events and hire arrangements. Interior access depends on those arrangements; historic cells and stairs may present physical constraints.
