Architecture and continuing use

Twelve bays are divided by brick pilaster strips across three storeys. Segmental-headed openings, timber sashes, shutters and paired cast-iron columns create a disciplined industrial frame beneath a slated roof.

Its story

The distillery was established around 1890, and the malt barn belongs to that founding phase. Production later ceased before Gordon & MacPhail revived Benromach and reopened the distillery in 1998.

Why it is included

The barn is a substantial surviving component of a working distillery, linking early industrial architecture with Forres’s continuing whisky economy.

What to notice

  • Twelve repeated bays along the whitewashed brick elevations.
  • Segmental window heads and lower shutters.
  • Pairs of cast-iron columns supporting each internal floor.

Reading the surroundings

Benromach publishes visitor-centre hours and tours. Upgrade work can restrict production-area access, so book ahead and follow site safety instructions.

What we know — and what remains uncertain

The statutory listing covers the malt barn only, not every building visible within the operating distillery complex.
