Architecture and continuing use

Coursed red rubble, crowstepped gables and small-paned openings define the mill ranges. The altered lade, stone outflow and substantial sluice preserve the site’s working relationship with water.

Its story

Andrew Meikle rebuilt an earlier mill after a fire around 1780. Milling ended about 1911, and the building later became the Robert Burns Centre and Film Theatre.

Why it is included

The record joins industrial water management with one of Dumfries’s principal cultural venues.

What to notice

  • Stone-built outflow beside the river.
  • Sluice gate and altered lade.
  • Different heights and phases of the mill ranges.

Reading the surroundings

Use the centre’s public entrance and current opening information. Water edges, sluices and service areas are not visitor routes unless marked.
