Architecture and continuing use
The symmetrical sandstone front centres on a projecting Ionic portico and cupola. Sculpture enriches the skyline, while the lower 1936 wing introduces a more horizontal interwar character.
Its story
F. J. C. Carruthers designed the main academy in 1895–1897. County architect John Hill added the north-east wing in 1936, extending a much older educational institution without imitating every Victorian detail.
Why it is included
It combines a confident late nineteenth-century public-school image with a legible interwar addition and continuing educational use.
What to notice
- The Ionic entrance portico and broad flight of steps.
- The winged lions and torch-bearing figure around the cupola.
- The stylistic change between the Victorian main block and the 1936 wing.
