Architecture and continuing use
A two-storey pedimented entrance block is recessed between single-storey pavilions. Harled walls, sandstone dressings, quoins and a Venetian window give the compact building a formal Palladian balance.

A. M. McKinlay designed the museum in 1925–1926, reportedly for a project commissioned by the Marquess of Bute. Exhibition rooms occupy the pavilions around a central hall, and the building remains a museum.
