Architecture, archaeology and continuing use

Adjoining two-storey ranges face the High Street above basements, with ashlar and rubble masonry recording more than one building phase. Behind them, former stable ranges enclose a cobbled court; inside, inter-war panelling, a plain bar and tiled fireplaces survive.

Its story

A Blue Bell occupied the site by the late eighteenth century and appears by name on the 1826 town plan. Annan’s licensed premises entered state ownership in 1917, when the inn received fittings associated with the effort to regulate drinking around the Gretna munitions works.

Why it is included

Continuing use, coaching history, stable-court fabric and an unusually legible state-management interior give the inn significance beyond its prominent street frontage.

What to notice

  • Different masonry and roof forms across the adjoining ranges.
  • Passage towards the enclosed former stable court.
  • Inter-war panelling and tiled fireplaces where customer access permits.

Reading the surroundings

This is a trading pub. Check current opening times, use customer areas only and ask before photographing the interior; the rear court may be busy during events.

Timeline

  1. 1770 Local evidence associates William Stewart’s inn with this date.
  2. 1826 John Wood’s plan labelled the premises as the Blue Bell.
  3. 1917 State ownership brought the pub into the Gretna control scheme.
  4. 18 August 2026 CAMRA refreshed its record of the independent venue.

What we know — and what remains uncertain

The statutory group incorporates earlier fabric and several ranges, so a single construction date would be misleading.
