Architecture and continuing use

The symmetrical ashlar front centres on twin canted bays with first-floor balconies. A Roman Doric doorway and differing side elevations reveal the ambition and gradual development of the house.

Its story

An early nineteenth-century house was substantially embellished in the Victorian period. Later public and charitable uses opened the estate setting to a wider community while retaining the principal rooms and garden relationship.

Why it is included

Category B architecture is strengthened by a clearly evidenced community purpose and sensitive continuing use.

What to notice

  • Twin canted bays and balcony brackets.
  • Fluted Roman Doric entrance columns.
  • Relationship between mansion, park and walled garden.
