Architecture and continuing use

An eleven-storey T-plan reinforced-concrete tower rises from a broad two-storey podium. Mineralite-faced panels, repeated windows and an uncompromising geometric profile express the centralised service logic of 1960s hospital planning.

Its story

The Phase II block was the core of Victoria Hospital’s second post-war expansion. Its tower-and-podium plan concentrated wards, theatres and services; later hospital phases transferred clinical functions and left the tower chiefly administrative.

Why it is included

It is an early and unusually complete Scottish example of high-rise NHS design, linking architectural experiment to the rapid expansion of universal healthcare.

What to notice

  • The narrow tower rising from the much wider podium.
  • Regular precast panels and horizontal window bands.
  • The contrast with lower Phase I buildings and the newer Phase III hospital.

Reading the surroundings

This is an operational hospital campus. Attend only for healthcare, work or authorised purposes, follow NHS directions and protect patient and staff privacy.

What we know — and what remains uncertain

HES reported the tower as administrative-only in 2022. NHS Fife confirms the wider hospital is fully operational but does not publish a room-by-room architectural occupancy schedule.
