Architecture and continuing use

A four-storey concrete-framed teaching block rises on pilotis behind glazed curtain walls. Elevated corridors connect a library, auditorium and stepped single-storey classrooms, enriched by curved forms and a nautical design theme.

Its story

Gavin McConnell led the design for Fife County’s education department between 1960 and 1964. A northern extension followed in 1975 as the school developed.

Why it is included

It gives post-war public architecture equal status with older monuments and shows how Modernist design served comprehensive education.

What to notice

  • The principal block lifted on concrete pilotis.
  • Glazed bridges connecting specialised blocks.
  • Curved roof-top rooms and nautical motifs.

Reading the surroundings

This is an active school with safeguarding controls, not an open visitor attraction. Community facilities have separate published hours and booking arrangements.
