A jubilee monument built for practical learning

The single-storey L-plan building uses rough-faced stone, broad round arches and a tall pyramidal-roofed tower. Large windows brought light into teaching spaces, while cable moulding, gargoyles and carved capitals give the small complex a strong public presence.

Its story

George Sutherland designed the school in 1890 as Elgin’s Queen Victoria Jubilee memorial. Created for science and art education, it later became part of Moray College and remains in the UHI Moray estate as the Victoria Art Building.

Why it is included

It adds education, art and a continuing institutional use while connecting a Victorian commemorative commission with present-day teaching.

What to notice

  • The tall two-stage tower with paired round-headed openings.
  • Large arched windows suited to well-lit teaching spaces.
  • The octagonal gatepiers and the building’s corner relationship to Moray Street.

Reading the surroundings

This is an operational education building. Campus access, teaching activity and student privacy must be respected; public exhibition access should be checked with UHI Moray.
