Architecture and continuing use
Coursed stone, steep gables, crowsteps and a round stair tower give the original block a compact Baronial silhouette. Later ranges extend the accommodation while remaining subordinate to the picturesque core.
Its story
George Rae designed the house about 1868. The University acquired and enlarged it, with Paul Waterhouse working in 1928 and Gillespie and Scott adding further accommodation around 1950.
Why it is included
Its layered conversion shows how a substantial Victorian house became part of St Andrews’ twentieth-century residential campus without losing its architectural identity.
What to notice
- The crowstepped gables and turreted stair tower.
- Changes in stonework where the residence was enlarged.
- The contrast between the domestic original block and later institutional ranges.
