Architecture and continuing use
Two storeys and attics enclose a small court. Splayed openings, swept dormers, pantiles, an arched close and a fragment reused from the cathedral give the modest exterior unusual depth.
Its story
The main range dates from about 1530 and the wing from around 1560. The Preservation Trust acquired number 11 in 1966, restored it, completed the work in 1971 and sold the property, demonstrating an early conservation-led rescue.
Why it is included
The Category A group is a rare domestic counterpoint to St Andrews’ monumental university and church architecture.
What to notice
- Arched close leading to the small court.
- Swept dormers and harled wall surfaces.
- Cathedral fragment above the courtyard doorway.
