Architecture and continuing use

The five-bay aisleless church uses cream sandstone dressings against whinstone walls. Trefoiled openings, a traceried east window, buttresses, crosses and patterned slates accompany a plain timber-roofed interior and later presbytery link.

Its story

The parish traces its foundation to 1850 and the present church was built in 1858. The two-storey presbytery link was added after 1899, extending the working parish complex without displacing the church’s simple Gothic form.

Why it is included

The ensemble documents the re-establishment and growth of Catholic worship in nineteenth-century Peebles and remains in its original use.

What to notice

  • The four-light curvilinear window at the chancel end.
  • Loop-traceried and trefoil-headed windows along the nave.
  • The physical link between church and presbytery.

Reading the surroundings

The Archdiocese publishes Mass times and parish contact details. Visit for worship or by arrangement, respect the presbytery as residential or pastoral space and avoid assuming general tourist opening.

What we know — and what remains uncertain

The original architect is not identified in the checked designation, and access outside liturgy depends on parish arrangements.
