Architecture and continuing use

Cream sandstone forms a three-sided arcade with pilasters, inscriptions, swagged urns and an ogee dome. Inside, a mosaic-inlaid Celtic cross and bronze name panels sit beneath a gold-toned tiled canopy.

Its story

B N H Orphoot designed the memorial in 1922 for the County of Peebles. It was renovated in the early 1950s and comprehensively refurbished and rededicated in 2003.

Why it is included

Its carefully integrated architecture, named county-wide community, surviving decorative scheme and continuing commemorative role distinguish it from a simple freestanding cross.

What to notice

  • The ogee dome and tiny open cupola.
  • Swagged urn finials above the shallow pilasters.
  • Mosaic borders and coloured cross within the shelter.

Reading the surroundings

The memorial is in the Chambers Institution courtyard. Refurbishment work may affect access; behave respectfully, avoid obstruction during remembrance events and check current site notices.
