The building and its setting

The church has a basilican arrangement with a prominent west window. Its attached and neighbouring parish buildings explain how worship, teaching and clerical accommodation were planned together. Rich internal finishes include marble and decorative tiling described in the HES account.

Its story

The parish was established in 1892. Its history connects the church and school with Father John Hughes’s provision for families in the industrial district. HES describes a building programme spanning 1896–1906, with school and presbytery preceding completion of the church. Published parish and diocesan accounts associate the church with 1899, so the sequence should not be reduced to one unqualified completion date.

Why it is included

The complex broadens the record beyond individual church facades to the architecture of parish education and community life.

What to look for

  • The west window’s circle-and-arch composition
  • the relationship of church, presbytery and former school

Reading the surroundings

The group stands on Dundyvan Road in Langloan. Follow parish access arrangements; associated spaces are not automatically open to visitors.

What we know — and what remains uncertain

The HES phasing and the 1899 date used by parish and diocesan sources are not fully reconciled. This record covers the listed group rather than treating each attached element as a separate discovery.
