The structure
Renaissance details give the elevations a formal civic character: shaped gables, projecting windows, ornamental parapets and sculptured niches. The complex occupies falling ground and is accompanied by substantial gatepiers and ironwork.
Its story
Designed by A McGregor Mitchell in 1894, the red-sandstone municipal complex combines civic architecture with later rebuilding. The town-hall portion was destroyed by fire and demolished in 1967; the corner block was rebuilt in 1991-92. The council subsequently proposed housing conversion. Its Kildonan Street on-site directory, updated in July 2026, records a 43-home project with a May 2026 start and estimated completion in July 2028. These dates do not establish completed or occupied housing.
Why it is included
Its fabric demonstrates both the ambitions of the burgh and the difficulty of adapting a partly reconstructed civic complex.
What to look for
- Shaped gables and projecting windows on Dunbeth Road
- The contrast between original elevations and the rebuilt corner
Reading the surroundings
The complex fronts Dunbeth Road and adjoining streets. Observe from public space and respect any works barriers.
Timeline

- 1967 Town-hall portion destroyed by fire and demolished.

- 2026 Council on-site directory records a May start for the housing project, with completion estimated for July 2028.
What we know — and what remains uncertain
The 2021 consultation describes proposals, including retention of the former council chamber and conference room for council use. Their final treatment has not been verified. The July 2026 directory supersedes the old forecast of completion by 2026, but its general project classification does not explain which historic elements will survive.
