Architecture and continuing use

Rubble and harled ranges cluster around narrow yards, with malt floors, kiln, mash and still accommodation, cooperage, bottling buildings and warehouses forming an unusually complete production landscape.

Its story

Established in 1828 during Campbeltown’s rapid distilling expansion, Springbank survived the industry’s later contraction. It continues to malt barley, distil, mature and bottle whisky in Campbeltown.

Why it is included

The building is important not only as industrial fabric but as a rare continuing concentration of production skills, employment and family ownership.

What to notice

  • Changing roof heights around tightly enclosed yards.
  • Kiln and maltings as visible parts of the production sequence.
  • Robust rubble walls and functional openings shaped by repeated adaptation.

Reading the surroundings

This is a working industrial site. Enter only on an authorised tour or for advertised visitor services, obey safety instructions and do not enter production or bonded areas independently.
