Architecture and continuing use

The three-storey, eleven-bay malt barn gives the compact complex an unusually long industrial elevation. Rubble walls, regular openings and adjoining warehouses express the storage and processing demands of whisky production.

Its story

Founded in 1832 as Scotia, the distillery was part of Campbeltown’s great nineteenth-century whisky economy. Rebuilding in 1897 and subsequent adaptation supported continued production under the Glen Scotia name.

Why it is included

It is one of the three operating distilleries that sustain Campbeltown’s status as a distinct Scotch whisky region.

What to notice

  • Long eleven-bay elevation of the former malt barn.
  • Relationship between production buildings and bonded warehouses.
  • Urban position among streets rather than on an isolated rural estate.

Reading the surroundings

Book an official tour or tasting and follow all age, safety and photography rules. Production spaces and warehouses are controlled industrial areas.
