Architecture and continuing use

The life-size freestone figure is carved with an emphatically large head and simplified bodily form. Rather than forming part of a grand monument, it stands as an individual sign-like object whose scale and silhouette make it legible from the street and whose weathering is part of its history.

Its story

The statue was carved in the early or middle nineteenth century, reportedly for a sailor’s widow, although its original home is disputed. It stood at Kingsford near Alford until 1906, moved to the Old Schoolhouse at Craigievar, and reached Oldmeldrum in 1938. HES later recategorised it to Category C for its group contribution.

Why it is included

Its sequence of moves and unresolved origin shows how public sculpture can acquire meaning through relocation as well as original commission.

What to notice

  • The deliberately oversized head.
  • Weathered freestone surfaces and simplified clothing.
  • Its relationship to the former hotel buildings and street corner.

Reading the surroundings

Observe from lawful public space and do not touch, lean on or climb the sculpture. The adjoining former hotel may be vacant or private.
