Architecture and continuing use

The late eighteenth-century centre is a harled, two-storey block with three windows, skewputts and a continuous dormer. A hipped north wing of about 1820 turns the corner with a splay and circular window, while the less regular south wing and low office range belong to later nineteenth-century expansion. Surviving glazing contributes strongly to its layered appearance.

Its story

The central block belongs to Oldmeldrum’s eighteenth-century market-town growth. About 1820 the hotel expanded northwards, and another wing followed in the mid nineteenth century. The 2022 council health check recorded the Meldrum Arms as vacant; later ownership, occupation and interior condition require fresh local confirmation.

Why it is included

The building makes long-lived hospitality and piecemeal commercial growth legible at the threshold of the Market Square.

What to notice

  • The dormered late eighteenth-century centre.
  • The circular window and splayed corner of the hipped north wing.
  • Changes in window rhythm revealing separate building phases.

Reading the surroundings

Treat the building as closed or private unless current signage states otherwise. Observe from public pavements and do not enter yards, doors or apparently vacant fabric.

Timeline

  1. Late 18th century The central three-window hotel block was built.
  2. Around 1820 A hipped north wing enlarged the premises at the corner.
  3. Mid 19th century The south wing and office range completed the layered composition.
  4. 2022 A council town-centre survey recorded the hotel as vacant.

What we know — and what remains uncertain

Vacancy was documented in 2022, not continuously monitored; the property’s present occupation and internal survival are not asserted.
