Architecture and continuing use

The L-plan block rises two storeys and an attic. Three windows organise the squared granite front, with canted dormers projecting into the roofline, while the secondary walls are harled. Its scale and materials allow it to contribute to the Square without competing with the Town Hall tower.

Its story

The building dates from the mid nineteenth century and was recorded as the post office range at 6–7 Market Square. It belongs to the phase when Oldmeldrum’s commercial and administrative services concentrated around the Square. The sources consulted do not establish whether postal functions continue within any part of the building.

Why it is included

It demonstrates how modest service buildings, not only major monuments, create the enclosure and working character of a market square.

What to notice

  • Three regularly spaced windows across the granite front.
  • Canted dormers rising from the attic storey.
  • The contrast between squared frontage and harled secondary walls.

Reading the surroundings

Use public pavements and respect current shops, residents and entrances. Do not describe the premises as an operating post office without checking current signage.

What we know — and what remains uncertain

The historic name records former use; present occupants and any surviving post-office function are not confirmed.
