Architecture and continuing use

The symmetrical four-storey main building uses harled walls and stone dressings in a Scots Renaissance composition. Projecting wings, gables and a disciplined central front give institutional scale to the hilltop campus.

Its story

Public and service subscriptions funded the school as a memorial to Queen Victoria and Scottish dead of the South African War. King Edward VII opened it on 28 September 1908; girls were admitted from 1996.

Why it is included

Category A architecture, national memorial purpose, unique Ministry of Defence role and continuing education give the school exceptional historical interest.

What to notice

  • The E-plan expressed by projecting ranges.
  • Harled walling contrasted with dressed stone.
  • The long symmetrical front visible within the wider campus.
