Architecture, archaeology and continuing use

Joass composed the building as an asymmetrical stone villa with gables and domestic windows. That familiar character softened the institutional function while allowing wards and service rooms to operate within a compact plan.

Its story

The memorial hospital opened in the 1890s and later joined the National Health Service. After medical use ended, the building was converted to a private house, preserving its exterior presence within the village.

Why it is included

The Category B building broadens Strathpeffer’s health story beyond commercial spa treatment to organised community medicine and philanthropy.

What to notice

  • A domestic villa character rather than an overt institutional façade.
  • Gables and varied openings associated with Joass’s picturesque work.
  • The careful adaptation of a former public building to private use.
