Architecture, archaeology and continuing use

The multi-storey hotel is composed as a prominent symmetrical block with projecting bays, crowstepped accents and a complex roofline. Public rooms and extensive bedroom accommodation were planned for large seasonal parties arriving by rail.

Its story

The Highland Railway Company commissioned the hotel as the spa entered its mature phase. It continued the close relationship between transport and hospitality and has survived changing tourist markets as an active hotel.

Why it is included

Category B listing recognises a substantial and comparatively late example of resort investment whose scale explains Strathpeffer’s former national reach.

What to notice

  • The balanced main elevation and advancing bays.
  • Crowsteps and chimneys animating the roofline.
  • The building’s commanding scale compared with domestic villas.

Reading the surroundings
