Architecture and setting

Harled walls, dressed stone edges, crowstepped gables and slate roofs unite a complex of different heights. Circular turrets and a projecting upper stage preserve a more defensive vocabulary within the later residence. HES records gun ports as well as enlarged windows and substantial additions.

Its story

The designation dates the tower house to 1530 and identifies work from several later centuries, including renovation by H Walker in 1890. The west wing is probably of 1822. The present operator advertises private weddings and retreats, continuing the adaptation of the estate to new purposes.

What to look for

  • Turrets and the contrast of building heights
  • Enlarged windows within older walling

Reading the surroundings

Use public streets and signed routes. Respect private houses, yards and gardens, and check arrangements before entering institutions or commercial venues.

What we know — and what remains uncertain

The complex should not be described as an unchanged sixteenth-century castle. Several phases are approximate, and private grounds are not open merely because the building is listed.
