Architecture and setting

Whin-rubble walls follow the watercourse, while bridges differ in detail along its route. The designation covers a length of the burn from north of Cupar Road towards Arnott Street, rather than a single isolated bridge. Low structures and street edges give the water a clear presence between buildings.

Its story

HES assigns the group to the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Repeated crossings connect routes on either side of the burn, helping explain the small-scale divisions within the town. Their significance lies partly in the sequence: ordinary infrastructure contributes to the shape of streets and neighbourhoods.

Why it is included

The burn’s masonry edges and crossings form a connected part of the townscape.

What to look for

  • Changes in bridge details along the burn
  • The relationship between masonry edges and adjoining streets

Reading the surroundings

Use public streets and signed routes. Respect private houses, yards and gardens, and check arrangements before entering institutions or commercial venues.

What we know — and what remains uncertain

Dates for individual bridges have not been established here. The brief historic description does not certify the condition of walls, watercourse edges or crossing surfaces.
