Architecture and setting
Two-storey whinstone houses have sandstone corners and window margins beneath slate roofs. Number 8 has a central entrance; the broader number 10 includes an arched passage and former shop openings. A single-storey rubble smithy survives behind, with a sloping corrugated-sheet roof.
Its story
The 2025 HES revision describes the houses and rear smithy as a significant group. Their arrangement makes room for domestic, commercial and craft activity within a narrow street plot. Later windows and rear additions show continued adaptation rather than a wholly untouched historic scene.
Why it is included
A cart passage connects street-front houses with evidence of work behind them.
What to look for
- The arched passage and former shop openings
- Sandstone details against whinstone rubble
Reading the surroundings
Use public streets and signed routes. Respect private houses, yards and gardens, and check arrangements before entering institutions or commercial venues.
What we know — and what remains uncertain
The smithy is within private ground and may not be visible from the street. Its inclusion is not an invitation to enter the passage or garden. Present uses of individual rooms have not been verified.
