Architecture and continuing use

The two-storey school has eight bays, projecting gabled groups and octagonal piers with ogee caps. Continuous hoodmoulds connect mullioned and transomed windows across the polished red-sandstone front. A separate single-storey headmaster’s house retains an asymmetrical gable, porch and curved bay.

Its story

The date 1897 is carved above the former girls’ entrance. Later additions extended the school to the rear while the main elevation, boundary walls and gates remained legible. Its collegiate details closely relate to the former Grammar School on Station Road.

Why it is included

Category B listing recognises a good late board school, its associated house and boundaries, and the continued legibility of historic educational planning.

What to notice

  • The carved “Girls” entrance and 1897 date panel.
  • Ogee-capped octagonal piers flanking the broad gables.
  • The small former headmaster’s house beside the larger school block.

Reading the surroundings

This is an operating school. Do not enter without appointment, photograph pupils or approach the former house; follow all safeguarding and visitor controls.

What we know — and what remains uncertain

The architect is not named in the designation, and later rear work is not fully dated. Current visitor access depends entirely on school arrangements.
