Architecture and continuing use

The original two-storey L-plan core uses stugged red sandstone with polished margins, mullioned windows and hoodmoulds. Advanced gables carry blind slits, broken pediments and ball finials. Gatepiers, low walls and sections of decorative railings survive around the historic block.

Its story

Uddingston Grammar opened here on 3 August 1885 under rector James Smith. An annexe arrived in 1925, a higher-grade department in 1960 and more extensions in 1994. The school moved to a new campus in 2009. Planning records then document residential redevelopment of the old site while retaining the listed core.

Why it is included

Category C listing recognises the original Grammar School as a prominent educational survivor whose architecture relates directly to Muiredge Primary and later neighbourhood change.

What to notice

  • Dutch gables framed by ogee-capped and finialled piers.
  • Mullioned windows beneath continuous hoodmoulds.
  • Historic walls and railings at the edge of the residential redevelopment.

Reading the surroundings

The former school is not an operating public institution. Respect homes, private grounds and residents; view only from lawful public space unless invited.

What we know — and what remains uncertain

The national designation protects only the original core, not every later school block. Residential redevelopment is established, but no claim is made about the interior of a particular dwelling.
