Municipal housing after the First World War
Logie opened on 27 May 1920, following the city architect’s proposals to relieve overcrowding. Dundee City Council describes a scheme of about 250 homes, combining planned gardens with carefully detailed housing. Its ‘three- and four-apartment’ houses used the Scottish count of principal rooms; these figures should not be read as bedroom counts.
Layout and services
Logie Avenue forms a central boulevard, crossed by curving streets. Brick details enliven the façades; gates, railings, paths and garden boundaries contribute to the repeated scale of the houses.
A municipal system originally supplied central heating and hot water. The investment in shared infrastructure joined the housing layout to a programme of domestic improvement. The council’s appraisal documents both the architecture and the history of these services.
Conservation and occupation
The photographed buildings show the combination of roughcast walls, brick dressings, hipped roofs and planted boundaries. Alterations to individual homes sit within the larger composition of repeated blocks and streets. The area is protected as a conservation area; that designation concerns the character of the ensemble.

Logie Avenue and its adjoining public streets provide views of the housing. The houses and gardens are occupied.
