Architecture and continuing use

A tall stepped frontage of rubble and ashlar combines large window groups, gables and a prominent tower with Arts and Crafts and Art Nouveau detail. The 1933 extension continues the institutional scale while remaining legible as a later phase.

Its story

James H. Langlands designed St Joseph’s School in 1905–1906 with W. G. Lamond assisting; William Friskin added an extension in 1933. The Al-Maktoum institute opened here in 2002 and developed into the present college.

Why it is included

The building demonstrates the capacity of an ambitious Edwardian school to support a distinct form of twenty-first-century higher education.

What to notice

  • Stepped multi-storey frontage.
  • Tower and asymmetrical roofline.
  • Contrasting rubble walls and ashlar dressings.
