Architecture and continuing use

A dignified stone frontage gives access to the large hall and supporting rooms. Classical restraint and carefully placed commemorative detail distinguish the building from more exuberant Victorian civic architecture nearby.

Its story

Lanark chose a useful public institution as its principal war memorial. Later closure was followed by a major refurbishment that restored the building as a flexible cultural and community venue.

Why it is included

Memorial purpose, inter-war civic design and renewed public use make the hall a substantial part of Lanark's twentieth-century story.

What to notice

  • The balanced stone entrance front.
  • Commemorative detail integrated with a working public building.
  • The scale of the auditorium behind the restrained facade.

Reading the surroundings

South Lanarkshire Leisure and Culture publishes event and booking information. Public access follows performances, classes or hires rather than unrestricted daily visiting.
