Building into the loch
HES dates the pier’s beginning to 1761, improvement and enlargement to 1809, and further extension to 1836. Massive masonry courses form the stone section; the timber extension stands on piles. Its successive phases make the waterfront’s practical infrastructure visible alongside the town’s formal buildings.
Community ownership
Inspire Inveraray owns and manages the pier for the community. The stone pier reopened in April 2024, supported by grants and donations. It provides berthing and a direct link between the town and visiting boats.
Current access
As checked on 19 October 2026, the operator states that the stone pier is open, but the timber extension remains closed and unsafe for all uses. Follow signs, keep away from the timber hammerhead, and take care around wet surfaces, mooring ropes and working vessels.
