Architecture, archaeology and continuing use

Bull-faced rubble and ashlar dressings form a two-storey L-plan station with offices and waiting space below former living accommodation. Gabled wings, tripartite windows and bargeboarded dormers animate the roof, which sweeps out as a canopy on braced timber columns.

Its story

Opened in 1868 for the extension of the Highland Railway into Sutherland, the station connected Golspie with regional and national markets and travel. The building retains the combined operational and domestic arrangement typical of smaller nineteenth-century stations.

Why it is included

Category B listing recognises the station's architectural completeness, continuing transport use and role in a transformative phase of Golspie's development.

What to notice

  • The roof sweeping into a sheltered platform canopy.
  • Bull-faced masonry contrasted with tooled dressings.
  • Bargeboarded dormers above the former dwelling.
