Architecture, archaeology and continuing use

The simple T-plan church presents a symmetrical six-bay front with entrances at the ends and longer central windows. Lattice glazing, shaped finials and a slate roof survive, while a low four-bay former school adjoins the ecclesiastical building.

Its story

Dated 1844, the church followed the 1843 Disruption that created the Free Church of Scotland. Its adjoining school reflects the close relationship between worship and denominational education in the nineteenth century; the church interior has since been recast.

Why it is included

Category B listing recognises a coherent early Free Church group, its characteristic materials and its continued place in Golspie's religious life.

What to notice

  • Red rubble walls and contrasting tooled dressings.
  • Long windows marking the principal worship space.
  • The smaller former school range beside the church.

Reading the surroundings

The church remains active. Attend advertised worship or events, respect congregational activity and do not assume that the adjoining former school has public access.
