Quick facts

  • Date: Circa 1870 according to HES.
  • Architect / designer: Designer not established in the sources checked.
  • Type: Gothic former church with lower flanking gables.
  • Designation: Listed building, Category C (LB24575).
  • Grid reference: NS 95880 97898.

A church spread across its frontage

The principal gable rises above lower outer gables, creating a broad composition rather than a single tower dominating the street. HES identifies a rose window, lancets and a twin-gabled porch. The large central window and carefully shaped stone openings preserve the building’s ecclesiastical character.

Conversion recorded in the fabric

The designation also notes domestic windows inserted in an outer range and partial conversion. The Council’s 2018 appraisal describes residential redevelopment at the corner of Harviestoun Road and Henderson Place. These dated accounts identify the building as a former church and record its residential conversion.

The distinction is visible in the relationship between the larger church openings and smaller domestic ones. The 2016 photograph records its appearance at that date.

Part of a wider religious landscape

Dollar’s other historic churches include St Columba’s, the Old Kirk and St James the Great. Their present uses should be checked separately.

What to notice

  • The hierarchy between the central and flanking gables.
  • The contrast between church-scale tracery and smaller domestic openings.
  • How the frontage addresses the western approach to the town.

Reading the surroundings

The converted building contains private premises. View it from public streets and respect entrances and gardens.

What remains uncertain

The circa 1870 date is the statutory description’s dating of the building, not a date assigned to the foundation of the Free Church congregation. A designer and a complete conversion chronology have not been established. Treat the premises as private.
