Architecture and continuing use

A symmetrical ashlar façade, pedimented centre and staged tower create a clear civic landmark. Classical proportion and prominent skyline matter as much as the office rooms within.

Its story

James Reid designed the town house in 1796. It has remained associated with local administration, and Aberdeenshire Council commissioned internal refurbishment and office-consolidation work in 2026.

Why it is included

It is Banff’s principal civic landmark and a strong example of continuing public use adapting within Category A fabric.

What to notice

  • The pedimented centre.
  • The staged tower above Low Street.
  • The regular classical window rhythm.
