Architecture and continuing use
Short circular granite columns support a richly modelled Gothic upper stage and slender spire. The drinking-fountain function is integrated into the memorial rather than expressed as a separate utilitarian structure.
Its story
The monument was erected in 1866 after the death of George Augustus Frederick John Murray, 6th Duke of Atholl. It became a focal object within The Cross, where nineteenth-century commemoration was set amid the earlier planned burgh streets.
Why it is included
Category B listing protects a distinctive small civic monument whose Gothic form, ducal association and central setting contribute strongly to Dunkeld’s public realm.
What to notice
- The circle of short polished granite columns.
- The transition from fountain base to spired Gothic crown.
- Its carefully centred position in The Cross.
Reading the surroundings
